AN ORDINANCE AMENDING JACKSONVILLE MUNICIPAL CODE 9 18.76 (SIGNS);
DECLARING AN EMERGENCY; AND, FOR OTHER PURPOSES.

WHEREAS, the Jacksonville City Council has reviewed the provisions of the current Jacksonville
Municipal Code regarding the use of small directional signs by realtors and residential contractors throughout
the City. In doing so, the Jacksonville City Council desires to modify specific provisions of Jacksonville
Municipal Code 9 18.76 (Signs) to better satisfy the needs of the community through additional regulation of
the use of signs.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED AND ENACTED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
JACKSONVILLE, ARKANSAS:
SECTION ONE: Jacksonville Municipal Code 9 18.76 is hereby modified and amended to include the
following additions, deletions, and modifications:
JMC 9 18.76.010 (Definitions) shall be amended to include the following:
Directional/Informational Sign. An on or off premises sign giving directional instructions or facility
information. Said sign shall be no larger than Six square feet (6 sn and may contain the name or logo of an
establishment, but no advertising copy shall be allowed. (Examples: Arrow signs and/or other directional signs
denoting the entrance, location, parking, or other incidental information regarding an establishment).
JMC S 18.76.030 (Conformance) shall hereinafter include the following:
B. Specific. - (8) Real Estate Signs. All signs advertising the availability of particular residential
property for sale or rent will be displayed only on the premises being advertised. These signs will not exceed
the maximum size of Six square feet (6 sn. Any signs located in areas zoned other than residential shall comply
with the provisions applicable to that particular zone.
However, the following exceptions shall apply for certain residential real estate signs:
(a) For existing residential areas, small directional signs stating HOME FOR SALE or HOME FOR
RENT shall be allowed at strategic points to direct the public to the specific property for sale;
b) For new residential developments or construction areas, developers of the subdivision(s) shall
be allowed to place a small directional sign with the name of the Subdivision and appropriate arrow
at each entry into said subdivision. Said signs will be maintained by the contractors and removed
within fifteen (15) days of the closing of the last home sold in said subdivision; and,
c) Said signs shall not exceed the equivalent of Sixteen square feet (16 sn.
SECTION TWO: All Ordinances, parts of Ordinances, or conflicts herewith are hereby repealed to the
extent of such conflict.
SECTION THREE: To better assist the public in safely determining the location of available
real estate, an emergency is declared. As such, this Ordinance shall take effect immediately upon passage and
publication, as provided by and subject to the requirements of applicable law.
