RESOLUTION NO. 762 (#15 - 2017)
A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING A PPRECIA TION FOR CAININE OFFICER
MAID UPON HIS RETIREMENT; IN SUPPORT OF TRANSFERRING
OWNERSHIPAND RESPONSIBILITY OFCANINE OFFICER MAIK TO
HIS.—HANDLER.. OFF, JOSHUA WHEELER AND, :FOR OTHER
PURPOSES.
WHEREAS, the City of 3acksonville has used canine officers. for many years and
have been fortunate to have both tremendous canine officers and officer handlers;
WHEREAS, Canine Officer Maik, who has served the Department valiantly for the
past Six (5) plus years as a certified North American Police. Dog, has participated in
numerous law enforcement activities, conducting over Nine Hundred (900) sweeps,
involved in over Three Hundred (300) drug related arrests, and involved in numerous
searches, drug and property seizures, cash seizures involving over Five Hundred Pounds
(500lbs.) in marijuana, not to mention Weapon recoveries and other such
accomplishments during his service to the citizens of Jacksonville.; and,:
WHEREAS, due to a decline in health and his age, Canine M.aik is no longer able to
complete all of the duties normally assigned to a Canine Officer. Maik's. brave service to
the City warrants appropriate care for the remainder of his Iife,.which will be provided by
Off. Wheeler and his family. Because State law, City policy, and Police Department policy
allows for Canine. Off cers to be relinquished and transferred to their Officer Handlers, the
City Council hereby agrees to do so.

SECTION ONE: In appreciation and support of the years of service and
dedication to the Jacksonville Police Department, the City of Jacksonville expresses its
gratitude,and. recognition of Canine Officer Maik's retirement from service. In accordance
with State law, City policy, and Police Department policy, the City Council authorizes.
relinquishment of Canine Maik to his handler, Off. Joshua Wheeler, and thanks Off..
Wheeler for his dedication to Maik.
SECTION TWO: Any and all other Resolutions in conflict herewith are
hereby'repealed to the extent of said conflict. This Resolution sh..aII be 1n effect from and
after its date of passage.
