0518 000315 RESOLUTION NO. 518 ( #5 - 99) A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING SUPPORT OF THE CONTINUATION OF HOME GAMES AT WAR MEMORIAL STADIUM IN LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS, BY THE UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS RAZORBACKS' FOOTBALL TEAM; AND, FOR OTHER PURPOSES. WHEREAS, the City of Jacksonville, Arkansas, a vital part of the Central Arkansas Area, is concerned over intentions announced by University of Arkansas Athletic Director Frank Broyles to reduce the number of home games played by the Arkansas Razorbacks football team during future football seasons; and, WHEREAS, the University of Arkansas has thousands of fans throughout the Central Arkansas Area that strongly support the tradition of playing home games at War Memorial Stadium. Not only do such events bring about enhanced spirit in support of the Razorbacks, but the businesses and citizens of Central Arkansas, including those in Jacksonville, derive a great deal of economic gain from hosting fans of our Southeast Conference (SEC) teams. To reduce and /or eliminate home games played at War Memorial Stadium will only result in losses, both economic and personal, to Central Arkansas businesses, citizens, and ALL Razorback fans. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF JACKSONVILLE, ARKANSAS, THAT: SECTION ONE: The City Council hereby request that Frank Broyles, Athletic Director of the University of Arkansas, reconsider his intention to reduce and/or eliminate playing home games at War Memorial Stadium for the University of Arkansas Razorbacks' football team. The City Council is concerned that such a decision will result in losses for all; not only will school spirit and support be negatively affected by such a decision, but Central Arkansas Area businesses and citizens, Jacksonville's included, will suffer economic losses as a result of such a decision. SECTION TWO: Given the continuation of home games at War Memorial Stadium, the City Council pledges its support to future enhancements of War Memorial Stadium's facilities so as to allow the Stadium to better accommodate the increased attendance of SEC games. SECTION THREE: All resolutions or parts of resolutions in conflict herewith are hereby repealed to the extent of said conflict. APPROVED AND ADOPTED THIS 15 . DAY OF APRIL, 1999.
