0407 RESOLUTION NO. 407 ( #1 - 89)
A RESOLUTION URGING THE ARKANSAS HIGHWAY AND TRANSPORTATION DEPART-
MENT TO REDESIGN THE INTERSECTION OF NORTH FIRST STREET AND JOHN
HARDEN DRIVE; AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES.
WHEREAS, the intersection of John Harden Drive and North
First Street is an extremely hazardous intersection where five
(5) accidents occurred in 1988 and all five (5) involved serious
injuries; and,
WHEREAS, the Jacksonville City Council and the Jacksonville
City Engineer have examined the situation and determined that a
redesign of the intersection would be in the best interest of all
parties concerned, especially in regards to the health and safety
of all the citizens of Jacksonville and all other persons who use
the John Harden Drive and North First Street intersection; and,
WHEREAS, the intersection of John Harden Drive and North
First Street is a highly traveled area with the North First Street
northbound traffic being six thousand, seven hundred (6,700) cars
per day and the John Harden Drive southbound traffic being one
thousand, seven hundred thirty (1,730) cars per day; and,
WHEREAS, the existing design of the intersection creates
extreme hazard to motorists in that it promotes head on colli-
sions.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF JACKSONVILLE, ARKANSAS, THAT:
SECTION ONE: The City Council of the City of Jacksonville,
Arkansas, and the City Engineer of the City of Jacksonville, do
hereby urge the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department to
redesign the intersection of John Harden Drive and North First
Street (Highway 161) as soon as possible to save lives and to pro-
tect the citizens of Jacksonville.
SECTION TWO: This Resolution shall be in effect from and
after its date of passage.
SECTION THREE: All Resolutions, or parts thereof, in
conflict herewith are hereby repealed to the extent of such
conflict.
