VARIANCE(S): Sign Variance at 220 West Main Street for First United Methodist Church
Chairman Young opened the public hearing at approximately 6:30 p.m.
First United Methodist Church representative Mr. John Washok related that the Church is replacing the existing sign, saying that the proposed sign would provide more visibility. He
explained that the new sign would have a message center display. He then answered that the height of the proposed sign would be less than the existing sign.
City Planner McCulley stated that the variance request is for maximum square footage and the LED sign. He then related that the sign company informed him that the LED sign has the new
technology that would automatically dim the sign at night.
Commissioner Gray pointed out that this request is similar to the approved signage for Gwatney Chevrolet, it was noted that this is not an unusual request.
City Planner McCulley related that churches and religious organizations have a smaller allowable maximum square footage than commercial signage.
City Attorney Bamburg clarified that the combined face size of all three signs exceeds the allowable square footage.
In response to a question posed by Commissioner Gray, Director of Administration Jay Whisker related that the sign code had changed, noting that churches went to a small allowable square
footage. He stated that the Code allows six square feet for residential and eighteen or twenty for churches, which is very small for commercial. He then noted that the Board of Adjustment
had recently granted sign variances to the Free Will Baptist Church on West Main Street and the Church on Green Acres that was formally Free Will Baptist Church.
Commissioner Brannen moved, seconded by Commissioner Perry to approve the sign variance as requested at 220 West Main Street for the First United Methodist Church. MOTION CARRIED.
Chairman Young closed the public hearing at approximately 6:37 p.m.
