City Clerk Lula M. Leonard recorded those listed above in atten dance and Chairman Brannen declared a quorum.
APPROVAL AND/OR CORRECTION OF MINUTES:
Commissioner Nabors moved, seconded by Commissioner John Hardwick that the minutes of the Board of Adjustment Meeting of January 22, 1997 be APPROVED, with the attendance of Mr. Nabors
and that of Mr. Rudy Reid deleted. MOTION CARRIED.
VARIANCE REQUEST: Sign Variance (Ch. 18.76.030 Jax. Mun. Code)
Chairman Brannen pointed out that the Jacksonville Municipal Code requires 1,000 feet between billboards and that the request of J & B Media Inc. is 500 feet. He pointed out that the
State requires 500 feet.
Mr. Tommy Dupree represented the petitioners. He said that signs were constructed in the area at 500 foot intervals while the existing sign ordinance for the City of Jacksonville was
being formulated. He said that the Highway Department has the 500-foot minimum for a long time.
He said that a variance for placement of a billboard sign at a 500-foot interval was granted approximately a year ago, pointing out that this billboard is on the west side of the freeway
opposite the one just mentioned.
A discussion revealed that the Ramada Inn sign was granted a variance due to a loss in plans formulating the North Belt Loop.
Mr. Boroughs stated that the area does not look cluttered to him.
Chairman Brannen related that he felt the 1000-foot requirement is mainly for the business section of the City and not directly related to farm land.
Commissioner B.J. Boroughs moved, seconded by Commissioner Ken Nabors to APPROVE the variance request of J & B Media Inc. to place a sign on the west side of Highway 67-167 at a 500-foot
interval from an existing sign. MOTION CARRIED.
